A Closer Look at Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers are thin ceramic shells, roughly the thickness of an eggshell, which are attached to one or more teeth. The medical-grade porcelain used to create these restorations is designed to mimic the color and sparkle of natural enamel. To ensure the most realistic results possible, Dr. Heathman works with highly skilled technicians at a reputable lab.

Are You a Candidate?

Porcelain veneers are typically recommended for patients who are concerned with aesthetic imperfections such as:

  • Small chips
  • Gaps between teeth
  • Worn or small teeth
  • Stubborn staining
  • Misshapen teeth
  • Cracks or fractures

For some patients, porcelain veneers can also offer an immediate solution for minor misalignment by creating the appearance of straighter teeth. It is important that patients are in good oral and periodontal health prior to undergoing any cosmetic procedures. If you have dental decay or structural damage, Dr. Heathman will first need to address these conditions.

The Treatment Process

The medical-grade porcelain used to create veneers is designed to mimic the color and sparkle of natural enamel.

To begin, you will attend a consultation with Dr. Heathman to determine whether porcelain veneers are right for you. At this time, you will discuss your concerns and expectations, and our team can address any questions or concerns you may have. We can also discuss available financing options, including CareCredit®, to help manage out-of-pocket costs.

Preparing the Teeth

During the next appointment, we will gently remove a portion of each treated tooth to ensure that the veneers do not appear unnatural or bulky. The area will be thoroughly numbed but nitrous oxide and oral medication are available for especially anxious patients. Once the teeth are fully prepared, we will take impressions which will be provided to the lab so technicians can design your custom veneers. You will typically be provided with temporary restorations until your next visit.

Placing the Veneers

Two to three weeks later, you will return to our office and have your permanent veneers placed. Once we verify the appearance of the restorations, they will be secured with a strong dental adhesive. Dr. Heathman always exercises the greatest attention to detail when placing veneers so you can expect a comfortable fit and beautiful results.

Minimal-Prep Veneers

In addition to traditional porcelain veneers, Dr. Heathman also offers minimal-prep veneers. In order to qualify for this treatment, patients must be seeking minimal corrections. In contrast to the traditional preparation process, the doctor will only remove an extremely small amount of enamel or in some cases, none at all. Additionally, treatment is often reversible, meaning patients will not need to replace their veneers if they fall off or have them removed.
